The Sara Bareilles Fan Community
Hey,
In today's music... many artists are remembered by their hits.
To the everyday stranger, Sara Bareilles means Love Song, not Bottle It Up.
Or K.O.A., not Uncharted. Since we all love Sara, we want EVERYTHING to go #1.
But what I don't understand (in a good way/sorta) is... in less than one week, Gonna Get Over
You's MV has recieved over 2.8million views!!!!! Now, it's had NO commerical launch platform
nor radio airplay (yet). Sounds like Gonna Be A Big F'en Hit. Anyway...
Uncharted, by chart position/sales, kinda tanked. It didn't even break Hot100. And it had a celeb \
name drop bump support MV, theme song to a youth based reality show, & live performance spots on tv... but radio totally neglected it. And after almost 8 months, only 2.6million views.
So, past all this blabbering, it just fascinates me how some things just happen.
Now hey, I think Uncharted had a lot of potential; but still equally glad to see how
right at birth G.G.O.Y. is having great success.
As a s/s myself, my question is "What the hell has turned the world onto one
song so much, while the previous single fell past the way-side?" What's the secret.
Besides a great song being a great song. What are your ideas Sara B. fans?

It's funny because I was asking the same thing to myself a couple of days ago.
I didn't understand why Uncharted was so neglected by radio stations and all that stuff. It had a lot of potential, the single version was really good. And just like you said, there were celebs in the music video.
Now. I think that Gonna Get Over You IS going to be a hit. Why ? The music video made a REAL buzz on the internet. Already 2.8 million views. I think it's because first Jonah Hill is the director. The press and blogs are really interested about his first music video, you know. Plus, the concept of the video is amazing. And Sara dancing is just awesome! iTunes, MTV and VH1 promoted the video. I think it helped. And the single version with Ryan Tedder is a great thing for Sara. One Republic has become really popular (I think) and their voices sound great together.
But yeah, I don't really understand why a song can be a hit and another one, maybe just as good or even better, can be underrated. It's the music business I guess.
Permalink Reply by Tom on September 26, 2011 at 6:59pm The way I see it... Now, I WORSHIP Sara, lol. So I'm saying this with love but being honest.
Sara's natural style walks the fine line between indie support & major label support. She's got a timeless
sound that just "works". But isn't a "popular" thing to follow.
Per album, she's guaranteed the 1st single will be promo'd & become a big hit, yet the rest will be neglected.
Then you have, "right now" music like Gaga & Katy Perry whose basically bang out 5 hit singles per album.
This happens all the time. You have the "right now sound" artists who usually have a 5-10 yr reign. Then fade.
But then you have artists like Sara & I'd say Rob Thomas too, who will be doing their thing 40 yrs from now
& while not racking no1's... will still chart very well & be known, not by culture-or time phase; but by pure talent.
Don't forget, there are a LOT of artists signed to major labels who really go unsupported. Ex: Matt Hires,
Ingrid Michaelson, Kate Voegele, etc. And on that note, I kinda laugh, b/c if I was a record label...
"Why take on an artist if you have no plans to push them into greater exposure?" I guess It has a lot to do w/ the artist too?
But hey, as fans... contact your local radio station's Program Coordinator (they choose airplay songs) & request Gonna Get Over You!.
Haha.... I would love Sara to go indie.... I think she could do an amazing job on her own. I keep acutlaly waiting for the day when her label disowns her because she wrote too many songs about how much she didn't like them.... lol :)
BTW.... Ingrid Michaelson is on her own label.... I'm pretty sure she created cabin 24 records... maybe I'm wrong... :)
But I like that Sara doesn't get so much publicity.... I know that sounds bad, but I like listening to artists when they are less popular because I just.... I don't know... I guess I just feel some sort of connection with them... you know? Like... they are closer than if they are on a huge label and they have millions and millions of fans, and i'm just one of them.... I like feeling like I have some sort of connection, though I never do... lol :)

I think that part of the story of GGOY is just luck. Sara has had a lot of media exposure this summer, both good and bad.
The stage collapse story in Indiana had her mentioned in every new article but in a negative context of course. Then "The Sing Off" gave her more but this time in a positive context. Basically, she's been everywhere in the summer.
Another thing is her touring with Sugarland. I was apprehensive about this at first, but it was a really great move on her part. Country music fans I have learned do not put up with AutoTune crap, their female vocalists almost always have great voices. In some ways Jennifer Nettles seems to be a Southern version of Sara. Long story short, I think a lot of Sugarland fans became aware of Sara because of the tour.
All this stuff happened in the 2 months leading up to the GGOY release.
I believe that The Sing Off NBC website has a link to the GGOY video, so a lot of Sing Off fans have probably checked out the video.
Finally, last fall, a East Coast DJ named Phathead interviewed Sara and basically told her that GGOY was going to be THE single on KH. He was really pressing Sara to release GGOY.
This guy loves Sara and knows his audience.
Permalink Reply by Tom on September 27, 2011 at 10:58am Ha, man... "Eastcoast DJ", he belongs to 94X in Farmingdale, a town on Long Island, NY.
Which is 15mins from my house, lol.
But may I say guys about the convo you mentioned about being a big star & connection...
There's a difference between being a big entertainer & being a big celebrity.
Big Entertainer Example: Rob Thomas is a music icon. In 15yrs + between his solo career, Matchbox Twenty career, & his writing... he's world renoun for his music, not his celebrity. Never once, is he written about by gossip.
Big Celebrity Example: Kim Kardashian. All that's posted of her is gossip & personal life stuff. Not talent based reporting.
And to Brian & Mike... when you care about someone (us to Sara), don't you want the best for her?
I can understand the personal connection but, what other ppl think of Sara shouldn't make a difference
to how you feel. She's not everyone else's girl, lol. It's her part to connection w/ ppl & that's why we love
her. And hell, I'm pretty sure if she never got signed, most of us wouldn't have had the opportunity to get
to know her. Think of it, I live East Coast USA & can barely name 5 indie bands. Let alone 3k miles away.
The girl is very down to earth, she'll never loose that. So lets not be selfish (be strong, lol), & just wish the best for her & hey, wouldn't it be nice to have a few more new fans to this website to support it? Strenght in numbers, lol!!!
Permalink Reply by William on September 27, 2011 at 11:43am Tom,
This is the type of conversation I love having, so thanks for posting this. I've had this discussion with other Sara fans re: what's the right fame level for her.
Your right, it is selfish and we should wish her the maximum success in her career.
But I think that this business of worrying about Sara becoming too famous comes from 3 reasons:
1) Personality: She will somehow change if she becomes a Beyonce level star, i.e. that she will lose the down to earthness that you talked about. She'll become just another big name Diva. IMO, this is dumb.
2) Accessability: Right now Sara is pretty accessible to her fans.If you go to the right venue and wait in the right place for the right amount of time, chances are pretty good. that you will meet her. I've met Sara 3 times and I'm really new to this game. But obviously the more famous she gets, the bigger the crowds, and therefore more security, less access, etc, etc.
3) Nostaliga factor: Some Sara fans have followed her career since 2003. So they have really seen her change from a shy, awkward person playing in tiny venues for free to wonderful performer she is today but now with a much larger audience. (Actually, let's just say more confidant. She's always been wonderful)
I think the 1'st reason is invalid because she's going to be 32 this December and she's seem to have a really strong sense of who she is, so in my opinion no danger of that.
The other 2 reasons have merit, but so what? We need (meaning me too :) ) get over it. It just goes to show you though how much we do love her.
So I totally agree with you. We should wish her the best and we should be strong lol.
Hope I didn't bore anybody :)
Permalink Reply by Tom on September 27, 2011 at 4:27pm To sum this up fair is to say... You can't change "heart." And she's heart & fire.
Not to get all pyschological & all, but when it comes to this, I'd say follow character.
Her character finds new heights. Fame & fortune won't change her. It hasn't yet, & never will.
From $10-$10million; she'd look at it as a way to help more.
Example: After Little Voice, fast forward two yrs, she opt'd to do the Gravity Tour at
small venues. After the tsunami, 95% artists canceled; she performed & donated time to help.
And I could go on forever w/ little things that make her, her (her = perfect). But we know.
When she does charity, she doesn't broadcast it to get an audience.
When she sings, she doesn't think "right now"; but gets real & becomes timeless.
When she's promoted, they don't go for an edgy persona/sex/etc, they let her be her.
We love Sara, because she's Sara... not because it's the "in" thing to do.
We own everything, but still by copies & other rare shit just to have something more of her.
We see her concerts because she's fuckin' Grade A+ artistry.
... Trust me, we have nothing to worry about. : )
Now call your local radio station's program director & request the shit out of G.G.O.Y.
until they play it or block your number, lol!!!!!
Permalink Reply by William on September 27, 2011 at 5:28pm Agreed. 100%.
Sorry, I can't help but give another example of how cool this woman is.
It's a small thing but when she co-hosted The Today Show, she brought along 3 of her friends from her UCLA days. The 2 women are from the group Raining Jane. Evidently, they go way back.
Well, she made sure that they got some exposure too and actually had them do some funny "background vocals". It was pretty cool.
Lots of small things like that.
Ok, that's my final word on this subject.
