Hey,

In today's music... many artists are remembered by their hits.

To the everyday stranger, Sara Bareilles means Love Song, not Bottle It Up.

Or K.O.A., not Uncharted.  Since we all love Sara, we want EVERYTHING to go #1.

But what I don't understand (in a good way/sorta) is... in less than one week, Gonna Get Over

You's MV has recieved over 2.8million views!!!!!  Now, it's had NO commerical launch platform

nor radio airplay (yet).  Sounds like Gonna Be A Big F'en Hit.  Anyway...

Uncharted, by chart position/sales, kinda tanked.  It didn't even break Hot100.  And it had a celeb \

name drop bump support MV, theme song to a youth based reality show, & live performance spots on tv... but radio totally neglected it.  And after almost 8 months, only 2.6million views.

So, past all this blabbering, it just fascinates me how some things just happen.

Now hey, I think Uncharted had a lot of potential; but still equally glad to see how

right at birth G.G.O.Y. is having great success.

As a s/s myself, my question is "What the hell has turned the world onto one

song so much, while the previous single fell past the way-side?"  What's the secret.

Besides a great song being a great song.  What are your ideas Sara B. fans?

I was so upset that Uncharted didn't do that well. I mean, it did okay, but probably just as well as Bottle It Up. Both are some of my favorite songs of hers. But I do think the reason Gonna Get Over You is doing so well is that Jonah Hill directed (which apparently is a huge deal), the video is awesome and funny and people are sharing it like crazy, she's now on the Sing-Off which is kind of helping put face with the name and helping people figure out who Sara Bareilles is, and it had it's fair share of promo (Access Hollywood, Today Show). Also, I think teen girls are eating it up because they 'relate.' I don't know. I hope it does well. I just hope radio doesn't kill it. Sidenote: as much as I want it, I don't think Hold My Heart will be a single anymore. Something tells me that it was always going to be GGOY or Hold My Heart. I think something off the new EP will be the next single. Hopefully Beautiful Girl.

Hey Erik,

Glad to see you have great taste too, lol.  And yes MB20 next yr, it should be interesting how the album

will be treated.  Will it get the many spin off singles like they used to, or lucky to have one hit mainstream.

Anyway...  Lets see how far they've come.

What new Sara EP?  The one she's been discussing w/ Ben Folds?  We can all wish, but to be honest, I highly

doubt if/when it does drop; it probably won't be a big "pop" deal.  The Voice gave Adam Levine a new image,

so "Jagger" & "Radio Heart..." Those type of songs are POP to the extreme, just catchy w/ nothing else going on.  It's "today" music.  Now, if Sara & Ben do something, it'll probably be along the lines of "Come Home" type.

Serious & heavy, or even the fun stuff will be poignant.  Don't get me wrong, fans will love it.  But I doubt it'll

make a splash.

Please don't anyone think I'm being harsh.  I worship Sara.  I'm just saying what we've already seen.

I think public appeal is sometimes rather mysterious.  It's hard to predict who will become hugely famous and successful and who won't.

Some people seem to have a genius for self-promotion and getting themselves seen/heard/recognized.  They know how to seduce people.  That doesn't necessarily take away anything from the quality of their work.  They may be monumentally talented.  But they also have the talent for getting their work exposed in the right way to enough people (or the right people).

I think another part of it is timing.  They tap into the zeitgeist and put out work that connects with the culture at a particular moment in time.  I've heard that said of the Beatles many times.

I hear ya Mike..

I think it comes down to several things.

And it depends on what "type" an artist is craving.

1)  Radio Airwave Playtime Supremacy (regardless of what type of artist or song).

2)  Image (it's bigger than we think)

3)  Persona

4)  Style

Lady Gaga...  Initially she was just a singer-songwriter like Sara or such.

Her label & her, came up w/ a way to make her the biggest name in music.

1)  They gave her a stage name (pretty basic)

2)  Attach her to a specific fan base (in her case, the lgbt community).

Funny, Sara supports them too.  Gaga has to broadcast to the world she does.

Things like that are usually done for exposure/image/persona sake.  How genuine she is, is questionable.

3)  Create her a sound that sounds like what's going on right now.

4)  Act outlandish. Meat suits, talking incoherently, etc

With all of these factors at play, it makes the audience remember this artist.

No doubt she has talent, she does.  But she is a shining example of before & after a label

works on an artist.

With Sara, it's kept simple...  She's just that f**king goodAll it's left to is the song & the artist.

Now, being real... that's why Love Song has 40million views & Bad Romance has 400million views.

To love Sara & her music is not the "popular" thing to do.  It's just quality music w/out bells & whistles.

Agree with you about Sara completely.

I think I read somewhere that Lady Gaga really wanted to be famous and that that was her main goal. So if she wants to do that, that's fine.

But there are many musicians out there that just really want to do their music and that's it. Norah Jones, Sara Mclachlan, Ben Folds, Weezer, etc, etc.

You never see these people in People magazine. They just do their stuff and go home.

Would Sara sell more music if she got arrested for drunk driving and then went on some rant? Yeah, probably, but that's not who she is.

The things is...

with the BIGGEST NAMES NOW artists, granted they'll have a strong 5yr run.  But what about longevity?

I feel, as long as Sara keeps doing what she's doing... she could be like how Matchbox Twenty,

Lifehouse, Nickelback are...  10-15yrs in the biz & they still get fair radio airplay/exposure/staples

in the music industry.

It's hard to compare Sara to someone like Lady Gaga.  Because whereas Sara is all about the music - Gaga is all about the 'performance act.' (and I don't necessarily mean that in a negative connotation)  That's the same thing with Katy Perry and Ke$ha and Niki Minaj, and they all do it to varying degrees of success or failure.

No one can argue about the talent of people when it's JUST them and nothing else layering or 'hiding' them.  Sara and Adele, and Amy before them, are all about the music.  Shame that Amy lost direction for that.

I think in terms of GGOY vs Uncharted, it comes down to everything everyone has already said previously - but also in my experiences, GGOY is just a more catchy song to people.  When I played Uncharted for my old roommates, they liked it.  When I played GGOY, they added it to their computers.  My new roommates and I listen to the song/music video like five times a day!

Also, GGOY is easier to SING TO.  And that's a big thing.  Uncharted's chorus is simple, but it's verses are very complex with the structure and pace.  And unless you make a niche out of it (Niki Minaj), it's much easier for people to listen to and enjoy a song on the radio that is easier to sing to.
